Apple paving the way for iPad adoption in classroom?

August 10, 2010  |   Homepage Post, Thinking   |   Wendy Tam  |   0 Comment

Apple extends another welcoming gesture to all US education institutes by announcing the App Store Volume Purchase Program.  With the program in place, education institutes would be able to buy iPhone / iPad Apps in bulk for their students & faculty at a half price discount.

On the other hand, Apple has informed iPhone & iPad Apps developers that they can choose to participate in this program which would offer a 50% discount off the apps’ list price to education institutes when they purchase 20 or more copies of their apps.

The first step:  iPad Apps as textbook supplement

What Every Asian Publisher Ought to Know about eBook

July 22, 2010  |   Thinking   |   Wendy Tam  |   0 Comment

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual Hong Kong Book Fair .   Thanks to iPad and iPhone, eBook and digital publishing become one of the highlights in this year’s exhibition.

New eBook Digitalization Partners

Hong Kong businesses again demonstrated their acute business sense and efficient execution ability:  In less than a year, we now have a good variety of eBook digitalization and Apps publishing service providers – such as Iatopia, ICO, Kineticspace, Innopage and Handheld Culture.  They’re offering the use of iPhone Apps as the mean to deliver eBooks.

The eBook …

What iPad means for Mobile Operators

January 28, 2010  |   Thinking   |   Wendy Tam  |   0 Comment

Few companies in the world receive widespread free publicity whenever they have a new product launch, Apple does.   Thanks to both traditional (it was even on the Evening News) & new media , everyone knows iPad was launched last night.
An unexpected introduction:  Micro SIM
I’m not surprised that many people are starting to fall in love with this latest gadget from Apple.  What caught my attention was the decision to use a different SIM format in iPad.   The SIM format is  Micro SIM, or 3FF (third form factor).   With a dimension of 12 x 15mm, about 52% smaller than …

Track & Alert is the New Search

December 05, 2009  |   Thinking   |   Wendy Tam  |   0 Comment

Among the 10 Cruical Consumer Trends for 2010, published by Trendwatching.com,  there is “Tracking & Alerting”:
If INFOLUST (consumers lusting after relevant information) is the enduring mega trend, then TRACKING and ALERTING are its du jour sub-trends.

First of all, TRACKING & ALERTING is the new searching, as it saves consumers time, makes it impossible to forget or miss out, and thus ultimately gives them yet another level of control. Count on everything being tracked and alerted on (there’s more than FedEx packages!): from friends (MASS MINGLING!) to enemies to fuel prices to …

Who is the biggest winner in AdMob acquisition?

November 10, 2009  |   Thinking   |   Wendy Tam  |   0 Comment

Today Omar Hamoui, Founder & CEO of Admob, announced the news that Google has agreed to acquire AdMob for USD$750 million.

The biggest winner and the real hero, in my point of view, is Michael Dearing,  the Angel investor who invested USD$4 million at the time when AdMob was merely a  mobile vision.
Constraints, Vision & Persistence
I’ve watching AdMob since its early start – at a time when the data charges were absurdly high;  People got ‘bill shock’, as they didn’t realize the  data charges were calculated by ‘bytes’ and would easily cost a fortune just …

Get ready for OPhone

August 27, 2009  |   Thinking   |   Wendy Tam  |   0 Comment

Have you heard of the OPhone?   It’s a next generation smartphone supporting China Mobile TD-SCDMA 3G standard.   The most interesting part about this platform, however, is not its TD-SCDMA radio, it’s China Mobile’s insight in creating its own mobile content ‘market place’ through a new smartphone platform.

Lawrence Chow from Borqs,  the company behind the OPhone OS – OMS,  shared with in excitement the imminent launch of Ophone: “Finally, the OPhone will be release on Aug 31, 2009, 3:00Pm in Beijing…”.

Lawrence also recommended this article – “王建宙:中国移动的道路”  (in Simplified Chinese), which offers a glimpse of OPhone’s strategic importance in China Mobile’s business strategy.
